Managers Phil Parkinson and Carlos Carvalhal could be facing disciplinary action after both were dismissed in a fiery finish to Bolton’s 3-2 Carabao Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Wanderers chief Parkinson and opposite number Carvalhal were sent from their respective dugouts in the 88th minute by referee David Webb.

Carvalhal then appeared to become embroiled with a steward and other security staff had to intervene before calm was restored.

And after leading 3-0 through goals from Dorian Dervite, Adam Armstrong (penalty) and Jem Karacan, Wanderers held on following a late two-goal reply by Jordan Rhodes.

Parkinson, who guided Bradford to the final in 2013, had been incensed by former Bolton midfielder Barry Bannan’s tackle on substitute Felipe Morais.

“Bannan, for me, has made a dangerous tackle right in front of us,” said Parkinson. “I have left the technical area by a couple of yards to have a go at him.

“Maybe I shouldn’t do that but it is a natural reaction. Carlos has run from their dugout right across to get involved. After that the ref sent us to the stand.”

On his team’s win, Parkinson added: “At 3-0 up we looked comfortable and seemed set for an easy night but we made it exciting for everyone.

“The club needed a lift and we have got that with a terrific performance.

“We showed passion in the game and how much we wanted to win.

“Wednesday have got a squad that should be threatening the top two with the squad they have.

“That team was on a par with Derby’s team from last Saturday so it is a big confidence boost for us.”

Carvalhal, who left his technical area several times during a thrilling second-round tie, admitted referee Webb made the right call in sending him off.

“It is easy to explain,” he said. “There was a foul from Baz (Bannan) and I didn’t like it because he (Parkinson) pressured the referee.

“I went to the fourth official and said he can’t press the referee. With the emotion of the moment I was out of my technical area.

“I think the decision of the referee was correct. But there are reasons why I moved from my position.”

On the incident with a steward he added: “I don’t want to talk too much about that.

“He apologised to me. It was a person with age. I must respect older persons but in that moment he acted really badly.”

Greater Manchester Police later confirmed they would not be taking further action.

On the match, the Wednesday manager said: “It was a very strange game.

“I think it is better to see the highlights to confirm what I am talking about.

‘We created a lot of chances and should have scored a lot of goals. And yet we were losing the game 3-0.

“We made some substitutions, made it 3-1, 3-2 and had two clear chances to score more goals.

“The negative its we are out of the cup The positive we came back with a strong reaction, we played with heart.”
