Manchester United have the most-tweeted team hashtag in global sport, Twitter has revealed.

To celebrate 10 years of the hashtag, which was invented on this day in 2007, the social networking service has released details of those most discussed in the world of sport.

An average of 125 million hashtags are shared every day on Twitter and United’s (#MUFC) is the most popular with regards to teams.

Although #MUFC is the most-tweeted team hashtag, the most-tweeted league hashtag is the #NFL, while #Euro2016 was the most-tweeted global sporting event hashtag.

Twitter has also released the five most impactful hashtags since the social media site was invented.

#FollowTheCaptain – Manchester City invited fans to share their motivational words for captain Vincent Kompany’s team-talk ahead of a derby against United.

#PutYourBatsOut – Fans put their cricket bats outside their house to pay tribute to Australian cricketer Phil Hughes following his sudden death at the age of 25.

#BedforAwayFans – Borussia Dortmund supporters offered travelling Monaco fans a room for the night after their Champions League tie in Germany was postponed following the explosion on the hosts’ team bus.

#Pogback – Paul Pogba, who became the first footballer to have his own emoji on Twitter, returned to Manchester United from Juventus in what was then a world-record transfer fee.

#FCBPSG – Barcelona produced a remarkable comeback to beat Paris St Germain 6-1 and advance to the Champions League semi-finals following a remarkable 6-5 aggregate victory.
