TWO visiting workers were viciously attacked on their first night out in Town last Friday. A 38-year-old man sustained head and facial injuries and a badly-broken ankle, for which he has since undergone a major operation.

After being threatened with a knife, the second man, in his 20s, was kicked to the floor and punched around the head.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to the incident, which occurred near Boots at about 10.55pm.

'This was a callous, vicious and unprovoked attack which was carried out in a cowardly manner,' said Detective Constable Andy Jones.

'There were definitely three, possibly four and maybe five people who carried out the attack, for which there was no motive.'

Police believe the perpetrators are locals and one of them could have been a woman.

'We need people to work with us to take this investigation forwards,' said DC Jones.

'The couple of witnesses that we have got have both said there were a lot of people around at the time.'

The victims, both from the Runcorn area, arrived in Guernsey last Tuesday to fit flooring in the new Foote's Lane grandstand.

They visited the Red Onion and Apartment bars and had a pint in each.

While leaving Lefebvre Street to go to the Lloyds TSB cashpoint, they noticed a noisy group of people at the bottom of Smith Street.

The 38-year-old was approached by one of the men, then the rest of the group followed.

The man was pushed to the floor and set upon by the group while, at the same time, his friend was threatened with a knife to stop him helping.

'We believe the man sustained his broken ankle in the attack when he was beaten around his head and his body, but he still managed to run to the door of Grut's shop,' said DC Jones.

The other man ran towards Smith Street where he was attacked. The assailants then ran off.

The second victim was later treated for shock and the trauma suffered.

Both victims were due to return to the UK tomorrow.

The first assailant is described as being in his 20s, about 5ft 10ins, of slim build with a dark complexion and a small, spikey fringe.

The second is believed to be in his mid 20s, about 6ft, with short mousy-coloured hair that was brushed forwards.

A third is described as being shorter than the others with short dark hair. All three are said to have been of scruffy appearance.

'The two victims are not local guys and they will not know whether they have been beaten up by local people or not,' said DC Jones.

CCTV camera footage will be examined, but he said it would not be relied upon.

'We are particularly keen to speak to somebody who saw something going on.'
