College storm to three consecutive victories
ELIZABETH COLLEGE ran in 86 points as they recorded three consecutive victories.
ELIZABETH COLLEGE ran in 86 points as they recorded three consecutive victories. Following the 10-a-side games for Years 9 and 10 that the secondary schools have been playing each week since half-term, the first round of the schools' seven-a-side rugby competition took place with the Year 9 and 10 pupils playing some exciting rugby.
In the Year 9 competition, the first game was between Les Beaucamps and Grammar School.
In a close contest, Grammar, who looked well-organised, ran out worthy 15-0 winners.
Next up it was Elizabeth College playing the Barbarians, a composite team. The Barbarians shocked the College, the reigning champions, by going into a 7-0 lead. Playing very direct rugby, they proved to be a handful for every team that they played.
However, using their pacy running backs, College eventually won 29-7.
Following this game, College had to turn straight round and play Les Beaucamps.
Although they won 17-5, this score flattered them as Les Beaucamps played much the better rugby for most of the game, but were unable to convert their possession into points.
There then followed the best two games of the morning.
First, Barbarians played the Grammar School and in a see-sawing game, where the lead changed hands several times, Barbarians ran out 27-21 winners, scoring their winning try in the final moments of the game.
Barbarians then turned straight around for their next game and promptly raced into a 24-0 lead against Les Beaucamps.
To their credit, les Beaucamps did not let their heads go down and in a nail-biting finish, Barbarians just held on for a 24-19 win.
The final game was between the Grammar School and Elizabeth College.
College finally put their game together and stormed to a 40-7 win by passing the ball around with a great deal of confidence, backed up by some very strong running rugby.
College ran out very worthy winners.
The year 10 competition also commenced with three very close games.
Grammar School edged out Elizabeth College 15-12, and drew with Les Beaucamps 10-10.
The third game was between Elizabeth College and a Barbarians team, with College just shading the game 17-15.
