Brehaut edges Bailey into second place
With all the Wedlake Bell Guernsey yellow jersey categories having been decided - bar mechanical problems - it only remained to be seen who would pick up KPMG's prize money and the overall points prize in the last of the Easter races, a five-lap road race on the L'Eree circuit.
With all the Wedlake Bell Guernsey yellow jersey categories having been decided - bar mechanical problems - it only remained to be seen who would pick up KPMG's prize money and the overall points prize in the last of the Easter races, a five-lap road race on the L'Eree circuit. While the seniors contested their four categories the under 16s and under 14s rode a one-lap time-trial.
Under 14 Karl Robert made it six wins out of six in 26.04, also beating under 16 Jonathan Dorey on the day by seven seconds.
Daniel Ingrouille, the youngest rider in the event, did extremely well to finish all the races.
At the end of the third lap of the road race, Paul Brehaut was sitting at the back of the elite group taking on a drink and most of the spectators thought that he was about to make a break.
Having punctured in the 25-mile time-trial, he had little chance of gaining much time on Aaron Bailey.
But, as expected, he attacked at the top of the climb to Torteval and by the end of the fourth lap had opened up a 27sec. lead which was to increase to 1min. 24sec. at the chequered flag.
Bailey settled for second place on the morning but he was elite champion and overall points winner.
Most of the first category riders appeared to be glued together for all the five laps.
It took a sprint to decide the winner - Stuart Le Tissier, who edged out Ann Bowditch and Simon Rowe.
Mike Brehaut was assured of the yellow jersey for this category and did not contest the sprint.
The second category race also saw a sprint finish with five riders battling it out on the final run in.
Drew Blatchford got the better of Bob Green, Ollie Duquemin and category winner Ben Le Prevost.
Veteran visitor Ted Boorman collected the third-category overall prize but on the morning had to give way in the sprint to a much younger rider Aidan Stanford who had also won the second/third category criterium the previous afternoon.
Sonia Le Maitre capped a good weekend by outsprinting Allan Renyard for third place.
