Morgan still going strong, but colleagues crash

DAWN MORGAN is the sole Guernsey representative in the semi-finals of the singles competitions. After the completion of the women's group stages, the three Guernsey players to make it through to the last 16 where all were drawn in the same eighth of the competition.

Morgan, having topped her group by winning all of her matches, had a bye through to the last eight where her opponent would be the winner of the match between Anne Rihoy and Kay Chivers.

The latter was victorious in that encounter, winning 11-4, 12-10, 11-1, 11-8.

Chivers then pushed Morgan extremely hard in the quarter-final, leading 3-1 in games at one stage.

But Morgan fought back to win 8-11, 11-5, 6-11, 9-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 and set up a semi-final clash with Gotland's Evelina Carlsson.

In the men's singles, all six Guernsey entrants reached the last 32 with two - Phil Hunkin and Phil Ogier - managing to progress through to the last eight.

Hunkin lost to defending champion Carl Prean in his quarter-final, 4-0, while Guernsey champion Ogier was defeated in five games by Michael Svensson.

Pete Bretel also lost to Prean in the knockout stages after beating fellow Sarnian Jez Powell while Richard Veale and Lucas Waring made the last 16 and last 32 respectively.
