SWELTERING heat greeted the 200-plus field for Jock Tanguy's Captain's Prize Stableford event at L'Ancresse. But while many melted under the sun Tony Veron took strength from the heat to post a superb 43 points and claim the top honours.

Terry Holder was runner-up, just one point back, while veteran John Brake led a group on 40 which also included NatWest Island Games gold medallist, Bobby Eggo.

Island champion Mick Marley also had a good day, posting 38 points, the same tally as fellow islander player Nigel Vaudin.

Ave Thompson led the increasingly stronger junior challenge, scoring 40 points, while fresh from his Noel Shield final appearance 13-year-old Craig Shorto should be happy with his 37.

Fellow junior Stuart Hamon scored 36 to finish comfortably in the top third of the field, while club professional Norman Wood came in with 35 points.

It was not such a good day for the defending champion, though.

Keith Corbin made hay in 2002 but a year on he struggled to 19 points and finished nearly at the back of the field.
