Brilliant Eggo shoots 64 again
FOR the second time this month Bobby Eggo has equalled the L'Ancresse course record.
FOR the second time this month Bobby Eggo has equalled the L'Ancresse course record. Guernsey's top player shot a 64 gross, net 66, to win the first prize in the Royal Guernsey Golf Club's Centenary Trophy.
It was the fourth time Eggo, now officially a plus 2.5 handicap, has shot 64.
He birdied the first, third, sixth and seventh to be out in 31. He also lipped out at eight.
On the back nine he collected further birdies at the 10th, 11th and 14th, but after pulling his second to 15 left, he dropped a shot at the par four.
After two more pars he was left needing to birdie the last for a 63, but from 15ft over-hit the putt and missed on the top side.
It had required something special, too, from the man fast heading towards a plus three handicap.
He only claimed victory on countback from David Lewis, a 10 handicap.
Five more players were two shots back on 68, among them John Le Lievre, who returned a handy 73 gross and ever-improving youngster Craig Shorto.
The 13-year-old covered the course in 83 strokes and as a result has seen his handicap lowered by another shot, to 14.
Two more juniors made the higher reaches of the leaderboard.
Jack Mitchell, the Guernsey Junior Club's best player, takes his handicap down to 2.8 after a net 71 (74 gross), while Chris Ahne shot a net 71 off 17.
Eggo's overall victory allowed Mick Marley to take the scratch prize, the island champion returning a 71 gross.
But no doubt his brother Andy will have pointed out Mick lost the family battle.
Andy, a 14 handicap, shot a net 69.
Defending champion Philip Le Lievre finished in the middle of the big field with a 75.
