MICK MARLEY and John Le Lievre won major honours at the L'Ancresse links yesterday. Marley collected the scratch Le Riche Cup for the first time since 1991 and Le Lievre topped the field in its handicap equivalent, the Tradesmen's Cup.

Meanwhile, Neil Tanguy recorded his first hole-in-one on a windy day at the 36-hole inter-club competitions.

Marley won the top prize by two shots from Dave Rowlinson. The former Muratti footballer shot a 72 first round and a par 70 second round; Rowlinson shot a 73 and a 71.

'This is an important one to win,' said Marley. 'Although people tend to think of the L'Ancresse Open as one of the majors, I think this one is more so.

'It might sound a bit big-headed but actually I wasn't totally happy with my scores today. I played well but with a bit more luck and a few more puts sunk I could've been a few shots better.'

Yesterday's competitions were the last two major events of the local golf calendar. The focus now turns to inter-island matters: the inter-insular is scheduled for the second weekend of September.

Guernsey selectors will start choosing their team today. 'There were quite a few people playing under a bit of pressure today because of the island selections coming up,' said Marley.
