Brehaut smashes 10-mile TT record
Paul Brehaut has re-written the record books once again.
Paul Brehaut has re-written the record books once again. In winning the Guernsey Velo Club's 10-mile time trial, the Commonwealth and Island Games rider sliced another five seconds off the previous record he had set just weeks earlier.
Brehaut posted a time of 21min. 14sec., giving him an average speed of 28.26mph from Cobo to Pleinmont and back.
'It was a textbook ride; everything went to plan,' he said.
While some people wonder how Brehaut can continue to improve at such an impressive rate, there is little mystery.
This is the first season for three years when he has been able to achieve a proper winter base.
Gone are the debilitating back injuries and illnesses which have cut short his racing seasons and seriously restricted his pre-season preparations.
'I think that I peaked for the Island Games and have just been able to maintain my form. I've not done too much, not pulled back; I'm just feeling good and 10 miles is my distance.
'On a good day with clear roads, someone could still go faster, in the 20s. I hope it will be me.'
Brehaut's result shadowed yet another impressive ride by Mike Dean to take second place in 22min. 45sec., recording another personal best.
Meanwhile, there was a return to form for Graham Le Maitre, following a spell out of the sport due to illness.
He completed the course in 23min. 45sec. Lynn Coombs was first woman in 25min. 09sec.
Brehaut's next major event is a two-up team time trial in Normandy with Terry Wright, thankfully fit and back on his bike following his Island Games accident.
It will be a hilly course over 32 miles and the pair are looking to go even faster than their time of last year, 1hr 19min.
They will be joined in France by Ann Bowditch and Chris Le Page, and Mick Garnham and Dave Gallienne. The event attracts hundreds of riders, starting at minute intervals from 7.30am to 4.30pm.
