VERONICA BOUGOURD produced her best form over the second leg of competition to win, yet again, the Royal Guernsey Ladies' Section Club Championship over 36 holes. fter a first week gross round of 78 Bougourd was leading the Canivet Trophy for the scratch standings, albeit by only the one shot from nearest rival Julie Creed.

In the chase for the Jaonneuse Trophy, Sally Ingrouille was the woman to catch after a first round net 66.

Bougourd, at this stage, was lying just outside the top 10, but with her trademark consistency she could not be ruled out.

Come the final day's play a birdie at the ninth, Bougourd's 27th hole, set up an outward 38 gross and with Creed still in touch only four shots adrift Bougourd needed to hold it together over her final nine holes.

She did so with cool ease, finishing with eight pars to take the Canivet Trophy with a final round of 75, six shots clear of runner-up Creed.

Club captain Gill Burford finished one-under par for her final four holes to snatch third place.

The fight for the Jaonneuse Trophy was a much more close affair, but Bougourd's net aggregate of 141 just managed to fend off Liz Darling (18 handicap) on countback.

Darling, who had shot a first round 69, still walked away with the first prize, however, as Bougourd elected to take the scratch award.

The remaining prize positions were also decided by countback calculation, with only one shot separating the top four players.

Carol Counihan (17) with two rounds of 70 and 72, was rewarded with third place, while Cath Besant (37) was fourth, also on 142.

Di Aitchison (9) produced the round of the day though, topping the second round handicap leaderboard with a net 67 after a disastrous first leg.

n*BOBBY EGGO shot a gross 69 with two birdies in the final three holes and once again left a host of Guernsey's finest golfers in his wake to win the Scratch Cup held in conjunction with the Junior Cup.

It seems, only off handicap is he beatable and the Junior Cup went to Rob Fearis (15).

The latter started the day ordinarily enough, finding himself three over after three, but a birdie on the long and difficult fourth got his winning round going.

A further birdie came at the sixth, after which Fearis went on to break the gross 80 barrier with a converted six-under-par net 64.

It was a performance matched only by sponsor's guest Geoff Orme (7 handicap) who obviously enjoyed his Thursday round and comfortably won the guest prize with a 71 gross.

In the runners-up enclosure was the Royal Guernsey's head chef Chris Byng (23), who was excused from the kitchen to head out and produce his best effort of the season to date, a net 66.

John Le Lievre again justified his dedication with a 72 gross and second spot in the Senior Cup. A further reduction in his handicap affirmed his position in the mid-category one status.

Other notable performances came from John Slattery (16), who has hit a run of good form and finished third in the Junior Cup, and Wayne Moore (10), whose one-under 69 won him the junior prize.

* SIX members of the Guernsey Junior Golf Club travelled to Hampshire to play in the Stoneham Junior Open and the county championship held at Alresford Golf Club.

Due to fog delays the lads missed the first 18 holes at Stoneham and the best performance of the day from a Sarnian perspective was from Emile Thompson, who teed up on the 18th hole at one over par.

A bogey six would have given him the overall scratch prize in the afternoon round. However, he flew the green with his third shot to go out of bounds and finished the hole with a nine.

The county championships, over 36 holes at Alresford, were played in temperatures in the low 90s.

All of the Guernsey entrants completed to two rounds, which was very commendable given the sapping conditions.

Ross Wheeler was the best performer off handicap, shooting consistent rounds of 69 and 71 on a par-69 CSS 68.

His second round included an eagle two on the par four 10th hole where he holed a seven iron.

Jack Mitchell continued his string of good performances with a gross 71 in the afternoon.

The best round of the day was by a 14-year-old who shot a course record of 65 in the morning.
