DAWN MORGAN has claimed the Jack Carrington, the first woman in the tournament's history to do so. In a tough final, she beat Jez Powell on deuce in the fourth game.

'It's a good feeling. It has always been in the back of my mind that I might win it. I was really pleased because I had a hard group. Ian Fitchet has always been my bogey player but I managed to beat him this time.

'I'm just really enjoying my game and still so keen to learn. In this game, you are never too old to learn. And I am still improving. '

With the group stage and the knockout held on the same evening, the Jack Carrington was a test of fitness as well as ability.

Now Morgan has other tournament wins in her sights.

With the Green team of the two previous years, Phil Ogier, Lucas Waring and Peter Bretel, ineligible and number-one seed Pipet withdrawing, the way was open at the top of the draw for young Scott Romeril to reach his first senior semi-final.

But in it he came up against Morgan. He started brightly and hit some excellent winners.

Morgan dug in, however, and her retrieving close to the table improved. She won the next three sets comfortably.

In the other semi-final, Powell saw off the top seed and holder Phil Hunkin in three straight sets.

Powell started the final against Morgan as favourite.

Now playing with pimples on one side of his bat, he has started the season well.

He won the first game 11-5, but Morgan again started to retrieve and kill the ball effectively and the game changed in her favour.

She reeled off the last three sets for a 3-1 win and a piece of history.
