FORMER La Grande Mare GC pro Gerard Bent has been hitting the headlines in the United Arab Emirates. Bent, 29 , a former Elizabeth College student, has won the Shaikh Rashid Trophy at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort and Spa.

He carded a 54-hole total of 205 - 10 under par - which included a final round 68.

His total was the second lowest in the event's history and his 68 was a record for a final-round score. He was 11 shots clear of runner-up Steve Edgely.

A pro at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club by Sheraton, Bent said: 'I really am thrilled to finally win this prestigious tournament. I have made the final group three times, but until now I haven't managed to win.'

In near-perfect playing conditions, Bent hit a first-round 66, two shots off the course record.

His success received full-colour coverage in Gulf News.
