WAYNE MOORE has won the annual Norman Wood prize, the most prestigious award on offer at the annual Guernsey Junior Golf Club prizegiving. Moore enjoyed an outstanding 2003, excelling in senior events as well as winning the GJGC's category one competition for the Valentine Trophy.

The highlight of Moore's year was his remarkable victory in the 72-hole U. V. Trophy, regarded as the island's top strokeplay event.

While Bobby Eggo was claiming the scratch version, the 15-year-old who started the year as an 18-handicap and ended it as a nine was seeing off dozens of seniors in the handicap stakes.

He also reached the final of the Noel Shield matchplay foursomes with fellow junior Craig Shorto, 13.

Chris Thompson, president of the GJGC, said Moore was typical of 'a handful of youngsters who benefited from playing in senior competitions regularly'.

'These boys played on two tours to Hampshire and the experience gained from that was quite remarkable.

'Hopefully, we plan to do similar trips this year,' said Thompson, who is also targeting girls to take up golf.

Of the 175-strong GJGC membership, a record number, less than a handful are girls.

'There is interest expressed from parents, but nothing ever comes to fruition,' added Thompson.

'The club is in a healthy state, though, and being well supported by senior golfers at L'Ancresse and, of course, the Royal Bank of Scotland International, our sponsor.'
