GUERNSEY put in a superb team performance on Saturday to take a giant step towards the Hampshire League One title. The Sarnians extended their lead at the top of the table to three points by defeating second-placed Isle of Wight 15-3 and coach Rob Box said that a win next week away to fellow promotion hopefuls Trojans could secure the league.

Box was ecstatic about his side's latest win.

'It was an excellent performance, a real team effort,' he said. The forwards were awesome and the backs were on form. We just came together as a team for the right match.

'I think Isle of Wight were a bit shocked. They came out quite relaxed and thought they would do a number on us.'

Guernsey's points came from a try apiece for Ian Johnston and Paul Livesey while fly-half Alec Bailey, who orchestrated the game for the Sarnians, added a conversion and a penalty.

'It was a long old day - we travelled out on the red-eye - and the guys just performed brilliantly. My captain, Carl Johnson, was superb. He called all the shots throughout the game.

'The Isle of Wight had a big 6ft 8in. second row and they just tried to maul it. They had that as a game plan and they could not change it whereas we could change the way we played,' said Box.
