Ogier's nine wins earn him CI title
PHIL OGIER has retained his Channel Islands Top-12 Tournament title.
PHIL OGIER has retained his Channel Islands Top-12 Tournament title. The senior event at the Geoff Reed Centre in Jersey went to the final match, with Guernsey's number one up against Caesarean Paul Marshall.
Cheered on by the home crowd, Marshall went 2-1 up, but Ogier retrieved doggedly and claimed the last two games to give him overall victory by a single point.
His record was nine wins from 11 matches, with one loss in each island to Phil Hunkin and Eugene Ellis.
But other than Ogier, Guernsey suffered a poor weekend in Jersey, players having carried forward results of matches played in their home island earlier in the season.
Only Jez Powell would have been pleased with his performance, with three wins out of six against Caesarean opposition.
It was particularly disappointing that Pete Bretel, Hunkin and Dawn Morgan won only one match each out of their six as Jersey dominated.
Ellis finished unbeaten on the day, including a 3-2 win over Ogier, while Tom Quinn and Trevor Lefebvre lost only to the title winner.
In the junior section for under-17 players, Scott Romeril suffered a surprise defeat to Andrew Gallichan, which meant that the Jersey player took the overall title.
Both finished on 21 points, having lost just one match each.
All the other Guernsey juniors acquitted themselves very well.
Mark Fenwick won five out of his six matches while Ryan Perry, Gary Dodd and Paul Hainsworth claimed three wins.
Carly Tucknott also claimed a victory against a Jersey opponent.
