Determined Wright after time trial records

TERRY WRIGHT has his sights firmly set.

TERRY WRIGHT has his sights firmly set. The talented cyclist - who suffered the horror crash last summer which put paid to his Island Games participation - is still smarting after losing his benchmark 25-mile time trial record and will be pushing hard to set a new best over both that distance and the 10-mile TT.

'The 10 is the one I want,' said Wright. 'I still hold the five and the 50.'

The man who took the 25 best from Wright will be taking a back seat this summer with family commitments. Island Games silver medallist Paul Brehaut will not be racing seriously in the first half of the season.

Not wanting to stray too far from his favoured sport, Brehaut decided to take up the post of club coach, and has been busy running weekly indoor cycling sessions at Amherst School.

Turn-outs have been very good with upwards of 25 cyclists there.

'I think a lot of members are going to have their best season yet; never have so many members followed a structured plan,' said an excited Brehaut.

Total CI Sports Personality of the Year Ann Bowditch has a full calendar of events: she is competing nationally at the 25, 50 and 100-mile time trials. Bowditch will be focusing all of her efforts on these events, culminating in the tough National Hill Climb which is held in the north-east of England on 31 October.

Also expected to figure in the season's top finishes are the fast-improving Mike Dean and the versatile Chris Le Page.

'With an array of talent among the youth of local cycling, the club expects the junior categories to be keenly contested,' said club press officer Mike Brehaut.

'Many of the club's youngsters will be swapping mud for tarmac as they will be old enough to ride multi-lap road races.

'The hottest contenders are expected to be national mountain-bike champion Jimmy Carling, the returning Tom Sherwill and Tobyn Horton, although Mike Serefin will be out to renew old rivalries when he comes of age in March.'

The Guernsey Velo Club 2004 road-race programme of events is slightly different from last year; the main change is a new summer criterium series, with eight events. The junior series is sponsored by The Rothschild Group, with senior categories sponsored by Wedlake Bell Guernsey. This event will have a cash prize list for all categories.

The first event of the year is a 19-mile time trial starting from Cobo at 7.30 tomorrow morning.
