ALASTAIR JARDINE produced a stunning finish to steer La Grande Mare into the next round of the Hampshire Sevens. In appalling conditions at L'Ancresse, the visitors were in danger of crashing out to the Guernsey Junior Golf Club until Jardine took over and booked them a place against St Pierre Park.

With six of the seven ties seemingly clear cut, match two between Jardine and the Juniors' Ave Thompson was to be crucial.

In strong winds and driving rain the bespectacled Jardine had his vision impaired for the opening 12 holes.

At that point he was four down, but with the rain having relented he inched back into the game and stood on the 18th tee all-square.

Jardine's fightback looked in vain as he found a gulley wide of the green and his opponent got safely on.

But La Grande Mare man chipped and putted for his par three and with the youngster three-putting the away team were through.

Although disappointed with the result, Junior Club president Chris Thompson praised the efforts of his lads in awful conditions.

'Of the 14 players, only three got over the hill with their drives at the first,' he added.

La Grande Mare's other winners were Hedley Ablitt, who beat island junior champion Jack Mitchell, Jim Banks and Greg Allison.
