After school club does trick for Castel
CASTEL SCHOOL emerged as victors of the Barclays Year 6 Kwik Cricket event.
CASTEL SCHOOL emerged as victors of the Barclays Year 6 Kwik Cricket event. Eight teams from seven schools took part in the competition at the College Field, the format being a straight knockout with the losing teams from the first round playing in a plate competition.
The match of the first round saw a strong La Mare de Carteret side edged out by Beechwood, who went on to lose to the eventual winners in the semi-finals.
St Martin's overcame Vale to reach the final but they met an in-form Castel team who scored 172 for seven in reply to 167 for two.
'Our after school cricket club gave us the chance to work with the players in the build up to the tournament and I am delighted with the way they pulled together as a team,' said Castel teacher Joe Bailey.
The Year 5 tournament has been played up to the semi-final stage with those matches and then the final being held during the interval of the county game between Sussex and Kent on Saturday 25 September.
Nine teams entered the competition and were split into groups of three with the top team in each group progressing to the finals day, along with the best runner-up.
Vale, Hautes Capelles and St Martin's all won their groups and were joined by La Mare de Carteret as the highest- scoring second-placed team by one run.
'It is great to see so many young boys and girls playing cricket and enjoying themselves. The standard of the game is high and I am looking forward to the finals in September,' said development coach Jason Shambrook.
