'Disappointed' Eggo equals course best
THE scoring in the Royal Guernsey Golf Club's final Thursday competition of the year did not disappoint as many members saved their best till last.
THE scoring in the Royal Guernsey Golf Club's final Thursday competition of the year did not disappoint as many members saved their best till last. Seven players tied for the lead in the Islands' Insurance-sponsored St Julian's Cup.
Among the group on 40 Stableford points was Bobby Eggo, who for the third time this year and the eighth in his illustrious golfing career equalled his own L'Ancresse course record of 64.
Reflecting upon such a feat, it is easy for a player of Eggo's quality to forget about the five birdies and one eagle in an 18-hole round; it is where the course record of seven under par could have been made or where it was lost that hits the front of the mind.
'I played well but was disappointed when I three-putted the 10th and I also missed a short birdie putt at the 16th,' said Eggo, who will finish the competitive season a plus-three handicapper.
Missing out on the handicap standings on countback meant Eggo claimed the scratch-prize honours for the umpteenth time this year.
Also firing a superb under-par gross round was Michel Davy who although third overall on countback will be pleased to have rounded off his recent hard work on his game with an 18 holes consisting of three birdies and only a few dropped shots to reduce his handicap to just two ahead of next year when on current form, Davy will be hard to ignore come island selection time.
Ahead of Davy and completing a day of fine scoring was Stan Baker (10 handicap) who after kicking off his round with a birdie three at the very first hole, just missed out on the winner's spot on countback.
With a strong birdie-par-par finish, local entertainer Dennis Burns ended the Royal Guernsey competitive season in style to claim the St Julian's Cup.
