THE new Yorkshire Guernsey basketball league season tipped off with predictable wins for Goldridge Estate Agents and Collins Stewart 3 at Beau Sejour. Under the new three-year sponsorship partnership with locally based Yorkshire Guernsey, it promises to be interesting times for the 23 teams, an increase of five from last season, mainly due to the introduction of the Business League where the first match saw the Royal Bank of Canada overcome Specsavers.

The match was fast and furious and unfortunately boiled over late in the game when two players failed to appreciate that basketball is physical and they must expect contact.

It is hoped they will learn quickly. It was neck-and-neck until one minute from the end when only one point separated the sides.

But a brace of baskets from Steve Hubert and Andy Shaw settled the result, a 52-47 win to RBC.

Goldridge set up their win in the Second Division with an emphatic first half when they led by 40 points to six.

At this point Richmond Worriers woke up and the second half was much closer, but they failed to prevent Goldridge from running out winners by 76 points to 32.

Chris Sims was the livewire for the Agents with 23 points, while the evergreen Chris Lamb reached 20 for the umpteenth time in his career.

Pat Ogier was successful with five shots from outside the arc to register 15 points.

The teams must have been practising hard from the free-throw line as between them they scored 19 from 26 attempts.
