GUERNSEY'S talented teenagers Daniel de la Mare and Lianna Bichard suffered late defeats and missed out on places in the semi-finals of the WIBC world under 25 singles championships at Jersey's Grainville stadium. Itonically, it was a Jerseyman who done for de la Mare.

Late on Friday, the Sarnian faced Jersey's John Lowery and despite having showed better form coming into the match, slipped to a shock straight sets defeat.

That loss effectively ended de la Mare's hopes of a place in the semi- finals, but he performed gallantly on Saturday morning, when he faced Wayne Hogg, from Scotland, one of the stars of the event.

The vastly experienced Hogg won in straight sets, but de la Mare showed skill to run him close, the final scoreline being 7-4, 9-5.

Hogg topped the group with six wins in six games, but, with only three wins, de la Mare was edged out.

Bichard finished joint third in her group but, after points for winning sets were taken into consideration, she had to settle, like de la Mare, for fourth in her seven-player pool.

Jamie Hill, a 23-year-old greenkeeper from New Zealand, won the men's title with a narrow tiebreak win over Hogg in the final, while Amy Monkhouse, a 25-year-old PE teacher from Grimsby, won the women's title.

Monkhouse, who has amassed a stack of national and international titles, scraped through in the final against Jersey's Lindsey Greechan, who was hoping to regain the title she last won in 2002.
