THE Guernsey Football Association has appointed retired police officer Pete Ward as its child protection officer. GFA president Dave Dorey had been in the role temporarily since September.

'Just before he retired from the force, the president approached Pete - more in hope than expectation. To our delight, after a few days spent considering the role, Pete agreed to take it on and we are so fortunate that he did,' said GFA secretary Matt Fallaize.

'Pete is experienced in the field and has a little more time on his hands now. His appointment ensures that the job will be done by someone with the impeccable credentials and the right background.

'Pete understands the sensitive and complicated field of child protection and we can be completely confident that the association's child protection duties will be carried out with absolute integrity and professionalism,' he added.

Ward has spent a great deal of time in sports administration, notably in swimming. He automatically gets a seat on the association's ruling council.

'It is a huge advantage that he has a sporting background,' Fallaize said.
