THIEVES targeted Royal British Legion clubs last night, acts described as sickening in the wake of Remembrance Day.

he western branch in St Saviour's was entered and a till and bottle containing a large amount of cash taken.

There was also an attempted break-in at the North Legion, Route du Picquerel, St Sampson's.

'I think they are sick to be quite honest, but what can you do about it?' said western branch chairman John Brehaut.

'Why would they want to attack an ex-service organisation? It sickens me at times the way this world is going.'

He added it was clear the thieves were after money. The amount taken is not known. 'It's just not a very good end to Remembrance weekend.'

'They're criminals and criminals take advantage of situations when they arrive. The fact that it's Remembrance weekend cuts no ice with them at all,' said local RBL president Major-General Griff Caldwell.

He added the bulk of the Poppy Appeal collection money was not stored at the clubs.

There have been break-ins in the past and collection tins in shops can also be targets, he said.

* Also last night, there was an attempted break-in at St Peter's Post Office and Barras Car Centre was entered and an empty till stolen.
