Youngsters provide only domestic wins
CANE TRUFFIT could have hardly made a better ring debut than he did at the St Pierre Park Hotel on Friday.
CANE TRUFFIT could have hardly made a better ring debut than he did at the St Pierre Park Hotel on Friday. The 14-year-old not only edged a cracking bout against his North East Counties opponent, D. Duggan, he walked away with the bout-of-the-night award which invariably goes to one of the seniors.
Mind, it was not a great evening for the home team, eight of which lost on points decisions.
Guernsey's only other winner was James Woolnough, 15, who won for the first time in three outings.
But despite the results, Amalgamated BC head coach Graham Guilbert was not despondent.
'They could have gone either way - all of them,' he said.
'Cane did well and showed a superb left jab and Woolnough boxed extremely well,' said the coach who had expected the best bout award to go to light-middleweight Howard Durey. 'It was toe-to-toe for the three rounds and it could have gone either way,' said the coach of his fight.
Alex Argo, a light-welterweight new to local boxing, also went down on points, but impressed Guilbert.
'He boxed really well for a first-timer and showed loads of heart. Again there was hardly anything in it.'
Clever welterweight Stuart Mourant topped the bill and was among the defeated, while Simon Hainsworth featured in another welterweight contest which saw both he and his opponent, C. Benford, taking standing counts.
