Guernsey 1, Jersey 1
GUERNSEY'S hugely promising under-17s were denied victory by a determined Jersey fight-back on Saturday. 'They did not have many shot and we stopped them well, but none of our players looked like they wanted to take the ball into the Jersey D and have a shot,' said coach Kath Guille.
'Our final ball was just not quite enough today.'
Jersey were missing the influential Jamey Herbert, though Becky Slater stepped into the playmaker role with increasing influence and success, especially after the break.
Hannah McLaughlin offered the first threat for Guernsey, her drive and shot forcing a save from Sylvia Spinola and the Jersey number one reacted smartly to keep out Becky Warren's follow-up before Jersey scrambled away the loose ball.
The home side enjoyed the majority of possession and territorial advantage in the first half, though Jersey defended tightly in their own 25.
But they could not keep out Warren for long, the lively forward turning in Lucy Rooney's shot from 10 yards out to give Guernsey the lead.
Rooney would also cause problems all game, as would Greta Raath when she came on at right wing. Her pace and direct running deserved better support.
The greens worked hard to keep out their opponents. Marshalled by Sophie Warren and with Katie Robinson marking tightly and tackling hard, the back line restricted Jersey to just two forays in the home 25 in the first period.
After the break, though, the visitors came more into the game.
They forced a succession of short corners and eventually Tori Slater profited, turning home a loose ball after Trudy Pye had saved twice.
