Draw keeps U-15 trophy in Greens' possession

GUERNSEY'S under-15 girls' hockey team held Jersey to a 0-0 away draw to retain the Shelagh Herbert Trophy. But the result could have been even better had captain Sophie Warren scored with a second-half penalty flick, which was well saved by the Jersey goalkeeper, Connie Taylor Cox.
It was tough on Warren, praised by coach Emma Webb as one of the top Guernsey players on the day. 'Sophie was everywhere in the game,' she said.
But Webb was delighted with the result, which continues Sarnian success after last year's 3-0 victory, following a run of losses in recent years.
'I was pleased we didn't lose,' she said. 'It was quite a close game with chances for both sides, but I think we did deserve a draw.'
Warren marshalled a defence of which goalkeeper Hannah Coutu, who made some great saves to keep the greens in the game, and Samantha Gervaise-Brazier were also singled out for praise by the coach.
Liz Chan and Isabel Wray were hard-working in midfield and right winger Greta Raath was Guernsey's main attacking threat.
'We had some good scoring opportunities and were unlucky not to convert at least one,' said Webb.
There was further good news for Ladies' College pupil Warren, who was named as skipper of the Channel Islands team which will compete in the under-15 West Counties Tournament next month. Seven of her Guernsey team-mates will join her in the squad.
