Yobbos seal final place
YOBBOS and Unwantables have booked themselves places in today's final of the Investec Cup.
YOBBOS and Unwantables have booked themselves places in today's final of the Investec Cup. Unwantables needed only a win to make it to the last two, but Yobbos had it all to do with wins over Tigers and Unwantables required for their final place.
'I'm well happy,' said Yobbos captain Steve Ward.
'We needed to beat Unwantables and Tigers and to do so after going behind in both was absolutely superb.'
In the meeting that will be repeated in the final, Unwantables took the lead over Ward's men thanks to a Dan Slimm goal.
That was cancelled out by a magnificent solo effort by Nic Chambers who took the ball from the halfway line, dribbled around a couple players, rounded keeper Paul Bullock and reverse-sticked the ball into the goal.
The whites then took the lead through a Ward goal when Chambers set him up and, with only Bullock to beat, he placed the ball under the outcoming keeper. Final score 2-1.
In Yobbos' second game of the day they overcame Tigers 3-1. Tigers went ahead thanks to a penalty flick converted by Mark Jefferies.
Yobbos drew level at a penalty corner that saw island coach Nick Mahy score when the ball was switched to him on the right-hand side and he smashed into the backboard. According to Ward, it was a goal straight from the training ground.
Goals by Tony Veillard and Nic Chambers took the game out of Tigers' reach.
Unwantables in their
second game of the day took care of the Rebel Alliance 4-1.
After their confidence-boosting win over the Unwantables, the momentum is now with Yobbos. They must be favourites to win and Ward recognises this but he is calling on his players to play to their best if they are to take the silverware.
'We should win if everybody plays to their capabilities,' said the trust company manager.
'It will be an even match and it will come down to whoever wants it more.
'It's the last game for Nic Chambers before he goes travelling and for Themistocles Argyrou before he goes back to South Africa for good.
So it would be nice to send them off with a medal.'
Unwantables' keeper Bullock was more pragmatic about tomorrow's final and has concerns about Yobbos' strikers.
'I'm nervous,' said Bullock. 'I'm wary of the strength of Chambers and Queripel up front.'
