DAY five of island championship fortnight went to form with the top two seeds booking their places in the final of the under-21 open singles. Predictably, Scott Romeril (seeded one) will meet James Lesbirel (two) in the final on Saturday week, but it was not all plain sailing for the favourite at the Guernsey Table Tennis Centre.
In the quarter-finals Romeril was taken to six sets by fifth-seed Adam Langlois, still young enough for the under-15 competition.
Having won the second and third sets Langlois had his nose in front, but then Romeril stepped up a gear to win the next three 11-2, 11-8, 11-6.
Romeril took no chances in the semis, beating third-seed Paul Hainsworth in straight sets.
Lesbirel also had a tough quarter-final, being pushed to six sets by under-13 boys' favourite, Matthew Stubbington.
In the semis Lesbirel beat top under-15, Gary Dodd, in five sets.
This evening it is the turn of the women with Kay Chivers clear favourite in the absence of title-holder, Dawn Morgan.
