GOLFERS are being urged to support the 15th annual Guernsey Open Charity Golf Classic. The event has over the years raised more than £100,000 for local charities, with a target of another £10,000 this year.

'I don't think any competition in the island offers so much for so little for so many,' said Guernsey Open Charity Golf chairman Deputy Ivan Rihoy.

For a £50 entry fee players get two rounds of golf, on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May, a pre-tournament reception and a gala dinner which will be attended by Sir John and Lady Foley.

Also appearing at the dinner will be ventriloquist Roger De Courcey and Nookie Bear.

'It will be a fantastic weekend and we hope we'll get a fantastic entry for all the effort that has gone into organising this year's event,' said Deputy Rihoy. 'Support us to help others.'

Thanks to sponsorship by Rihoy Electrics, Barclays Bank, La Grande Mare and others, all money raised goes to charity and those benefiting include Grow Ltd and the Guernsey Gosh Appeal.

The event takes place at La Grande Mare Hotel, Golf & Country Club with prizes based on the Masters, with the winner getting the coveted green blazer.

Players could also raise a further £10,000 for charity by sinking a hole in one and other prizes are available.

'We need the players to make it work.

'In the past it's been very well supported and we hope this year will be just as good - I'd encourage people to get their entries in early.'

Entry forms are available from La Grande Mare and the Royal Guernsey, L'Ancresse and St Pierre Park golf clubs.
