Pearson wastes little time
GUERNSEY'S pugilists enjoyed a top night against the North East Counties team.
GUERNSEY'S pugilists enjoyed a top night against the North East Counties team. In their last show of the winter season, the dinner boxing fraternity at the St Pierre Park Hotel witnessed some fine boxing from most of the bailiwick's top fighters.
Callum Pearson put on a particularly notable display.
'I'm absolutely delighted,' said the Amalgamed Boys Club coach Graham Guilbert.
'It was the show of the season and the performance of the night was from Callum.
'He's got a lot of class in him and for a 14-year-old boy he knows all the shots and he's putting it all together now. He had his mad head on again in that bout and he has now stopped his last two opponents in the first round.
'He's looking really impressive now.'
Pearson came up against M. Dehas in the welterweight category and he finished off the visitor with some good counter punches.
The show had opened with a bout between local juniors Gage Morebaker and Adam Baker.
Morebaker won on points after a very close fight.
Alderney's ever-improving Dave Chadney beat T. Franks on points but Bradley Watson's proposed bout was called off as his opponent weighed in seven kilos too heavy.
James Woolnough stopped his opponent in the second round after a good combination of punches and then Joel Mitten lost on points to a superior L. Wilson.
Simon Hamon struggled against his taller opponent, unable to get inside Smith's reach to cause any damage.
The Guernsey lad was stopped in the second.
Alderney's super heavyweight Luke Jean stepped into the ring and despite putting in a fine performance, lost on points to M. Keenan.
Jean has quick hands for a big man and he looks good for next season.
The aggressive Daniel Froome came unstuck and lost on points, but the bout of the night saw Alderney's Adam Rose beat M. McCannon on points.
Rose has been sparring with Jean and training with the bigger man has paid dividends for the light-heavyweight.
His performance warranted the standing ovation it received following the final bell.
At the top of the bill, 22-year-old Michael Duff stopped Forester in the first round.
Duff used his longer reach to good effect and the North East Counties boxer was never in the frame.
