Wallen's rich run of form continues
HSBC GRIFFINS are now looking to take flight in Barclays Division One.
HSBC GRIFFINS are now looking to take flight in Barclays Division One. After beating fellow strugglers Deloitte by 72 runs last night, one more victory from their last two games could ensure that they will play with the big boys again next year.
Jeremy Sharratt's men face Total Cobo and Aon St Saviour's next week with his team and joint bottom-placed DHS St Pierre on four points, both with two games to go.
Deloitte and St Pierre face each other on Tuesday and it is now paramount to St Pierre that they win to avoid the drop. Deloitte, who are on six points, could be dragged into a play-off if they lose.
'If we beat St Saviour's, we could stay up without a play-off,' said Sharratt.
'St Pierre have a crunch game against Deloitte and Deloitte could do us a favour next week if they win. It's nice to still be involved at this stage of the season.'
Deloitte captain Simon Huxtable won the toss, put Griffins in and he must have immediately regretted his decision as Gary de Carteret's first over went for 12 runs at the hands of Damian Wallen. The batsman has been in good form of late and last evening he was in a destructive mood as he plundered 51 in double-quick time.
His effort helped set up a target of 157 for Deloitte to chase in 16 overs and they were always going to struggle when they lost openers Huxtable and Neil Fitchet in the second over, bowled by Matthew Walker.
The seam bowler went onto take four for 12 from his four overs.
