ANDY EGGO has retained the Le Riche Cup. The island star had a total score of 136 for the 36-hole competition at L'Ancresse, which gave him a five-shot lead over second place Mick Marley.

It wasn't a vintage Eggo performance, though.

'I won it last year and trying to retain it was pretty difficult,' he said.

'I've had an up and down season. It's been a little bit hit or miss and I was even hit or miss during the competition.

'I didn't putt particularly brilliantly, but then again I've never been a great putter. I am now starting to play a bit better at the end of the season and hopefully I can keep getting better for the inter-insular on 10 September.'

Eggo went around in 68 in the morning and repeated this score during the afternoon. Bobby Eggo, who hit 76 and 70 for his 146, partnered his brother.

Both Eggos are certain starters for the Jersey clash in early September and someone who did his chances of call up no harm at all was Jamie Blondel who won the Tradesman cup off handicap.

Playing off two, he went round in 67 and 68 for a combined score of 135.

His efforts ensured that his handicap has now been reduced to just one.

'I'm really chuffed to have won,' said Blondel.

'It's been a pretty consistent year and I wanted to finish off well in the last competition. I'm just really pleased to play well in the morning and then in the afternoon as well.'

Tony Veillard took second place when he also shot 135 and the rules say that the second round score is taken into consideration. Veillard followed a mightily impressive net 65 with a 70, two shots behind Blondel.

Steve Birkett won the nearest to the 18th hole contest when he got 33 inches from the pin.
