Rich and Frith steer Cobo to four in a row
TWENTY years since he last reached three figures, Gary Rich chose the Cable & Wireless GCA Cup final to produce his first hundred in two decades.
TWENTY years since he last reached three figures, Gary Rich chose the Cable & Wireless GCA Cup final to produce his first hundred in two decades. The Total Cobo stalwart batted beautifully along with Jeremy Frith to dig their side out of a bit of bother and secure the club's fourth successive win in the competition.
Having seen their team slip to 58 for three after the dismissals of Justin Ferbrache, Matt Oliver and Stuart Le Prevost, Rich and Frith rebuilt the innings with a marvellous partnership of 155.
Frith, who has yet to lose a GCA Cup game in five seasons in Guernsey cricket, looked set to make a ton himself but fell five runs short when he holed out to long off.
Rich, though, accelerated superbly after reaching 50 and brought up his century with a huge six over extra-cover and was there at the end as Cobo racked up 260.
'My last one was in the afternoon league against St Saviour's in, I think, 1985. There have been quite a few 80s and 90s since, but no hundreds,' said Rich.
Rain delayed the commencement of the reply, with PKF Wanderers' target revised to 245 in 44 overs.
But, missing important batsmen such as Richard Veillard and James Warr, they lost wickets regularly and fell well short, being bowled out for 128.
After Mark Renouf had made the early breakthroughs, Peter Le Hegarat and Kris Moherndl claimed five wickets between them.
'We bowled and fielded well, but with the people we had missing we had no one to stay around and get a big score,' said Dave Piesing.
