SEAN MILLS beat the wind and the best junior golfers in the Channel Islands to win the Investec Guernsey Junior Open. On a day when force five to six winds made life particularly difficult at L'Ancresse, Mills shot a superb two-over 72 to take the title by a remarkable five shots from La Moye's Chris Young, who won the nearest-the-pin prizes at the third and 18th holes.

The two were the only players in a field boasting nearly two dozen Jersey golfers and the cream of local talent to break 80.

Defending champion Jack Mitchell had a day he would rather forget and chose not to submit a card.

Mind you, he was not alone.

Jack Critchley, his opponent in the forthcoming CI junior matchplay final, also ripped up.

Elliott Corbin started the day as a 21 handicap but finished it three strokes lighter after shooting a net 66 and claiming the main handicap prize, beating Mills by a single stroke.

Jamie Le Page also beat 70 to finish third.

Chris Thompson, president of the Guernsey Junior Club, said the event was a 'tremendous success'.

'Investec's support is very helpful. They provided nine main prizes and five minor ones, plus gift bags for all the players.

'We hope that their continued support will encourage players from Hampshire to enter the event next year.'

Thompson said the club were determined to raise the profile of the competition.

'We have some excellent junior golfers in both islands and they are excited to be involved in this event.

'If we can demonstrate the high calibre of golf being played at this level and show just how well organised and professional the open has become, we believe we can attract juniors from around the UK as well as our homegrown talent in the Channel Islands.'

Investec's Marc Krombach said they were happy to be involved.

'These youngsters are committed and determined to their sport and Investec is pleased to be able to assist in staging this event which we hope will become a fixture for junior golfers far and wide.'
