Guernsey side has had the best preparation

GUERNSEY have left few stones unturned as they prepare for the under-15 national finals. The Nick Mahy-coached side has exceeded all expectations in reaching the last four and in the finals will come up against three of the strongest clubs in the country, Canterbury, Beeston and Bowden.
The team, which is backed by PricewaterhouseCoopers, travelled to Guildford Hockey Club to experience playing on a water-based Astro pitch which requires a fundamental different skill set.
Mahy said his squad quickly got to grips with the 'bobble and speed of the pitch' and 'grasped the tactical advantages of using different passing techniques'.
'Conversely, it helped our defenders to understand how to defend against the subtle dinks and lifts that the different surface promotes.'
It is the first time that any island side has progressed this far in a national event and they will have the backing of more than 50 supporters.
Jason Robilliard, president of the Guernsey Hockey Association, said: 'It is unbelievable that Guernsey are competing against three of the strongest clubs in England.
'They are well known for feeding players into the national side and it will be a great experience for our players.
'I'm sure the lads will do the island proud and that their unorthodox approach and skills will surprise all the other sides.'
