YEMEN accounted for the young Guernsey men's side on day two of the world team championships in Bremen. But there was good news for the Sarnian women who, having lost to Lebanon and Portugal on the opening day, beat Madagascar 3-0 when they returned to the German arena.
Alice Loveridge followed her victory over the Lebanese world number 700 with a good 3-1 win and there was a remarkable comeback by Bethany Pipet who lost the first two games to five and seven, but showed great fighting spirit to win the next three 11-5, 11-8, 11-9.
With Madagascar being only a two-player team the third rubber was conceded to the Sarnians.
In the men's championship, Guernsey lost 3-0 to Yemen despite a brave showing by the young squad of Scott Romeril, Garry Dodd and James Lesbirel.
Romeril lost 3-0 in a fast and entertaining match, while Dodd did well and was unlucky to lose out in the first two tight games, 10-12, 13-15.
He fought hard in the third, too, but again lost narrowly to eight.
Lesbirel went on in an attempt to save the match but Gubran had too much power and won in straight games.
