BREAST cancer survivor Linda Winn lived up to her name as she took the coveted Yorkshire Guernsey Cancer Relief Trophy. Playing off 35, the woman from Yorkshire scored 45 Stableford points to finish six points clear of runner-up Carolyn Harbour. As a consequence of her success, her handicap has been reduced to 30.
Winn followed a total of 18 points for the front nine with an incredible 27 after the turn.
'It was an extremely well deserved win,' said Royal Guernsey Golf Club Lady Captain June Wright.
It was a particularly poignant and special day for Winn.
Having recently recovered from breast cancer, not only was this the first competition she had ever won but she was also celebrating her son's 30th birthday.
Having been playing golf for only five years, Winn joined the RGGC two years ago before being diagnosed with breast cancer. Having undergone successful treatment she was only able to begin playing more regularly at the end of last summer.
'I hope that my win will be an inspiration to everyone currently undergoing treatment for cancer,' she said.
'Once you come through treatment there is still light at the end of the tunnel.'
Elaine Ward, competition secretary, revealed that there had been good scores all round.
'With a field of 73 taking part, this is one of the biggest competition entries of the year, apart from Lady Captain's Day and the Ladies Open,' she said.
Barbara Coker, who with her husband Stan donated the trophy, presented the cup to a delighted winner.
A cheque for £1,430 for Cancer Relief was presented to Jurat Keith Bichard, chairman of the Guernsey Society for Cancer Relief by the sponsor Peter Symes, managing director of Yorkshire Guernsey, who also presented the prizes to the winning golfers.
The longest drive in the bronze division was won by Sarah Cummings and Jan Chamberlain took the silver division honour.
Moira Finn and Liz Downing won the nearest the pin competition on the 18th hole for the bronze and silver divisions respectively.
In third place on countback was Lucie Sims with 38 points. Mandy Webber was fourth.
