GUERNSEY'S young men squads placed 99th out of 108 at the world table tennis championships in Bremen after a 3-1 win over Jersey in their final play-off match. A week before the Green Trophy inter-insular clash in Guernsey, it was encouraging to see the Guernsey juniors and, particularly, Scott Romeril in dominant form.

Playing at one, Romeril found his best form of the championships by sweeping aside Peter Marshall 11-3, 11-6, 11-4.

Garry Dodd then edged out Trevor Le Fefebvre in five, 12-10 in the decider, and although James Lesbirel went down in four to Eugene Ellis, Romeril returned to sew up the match with a comfortable 11-5, 12-10, 11-6 win over Lefevbre.

Romeril will again meet Ellis and Lefevbre in Saturday's inter-insular in which the Caesareans will field their new Polish men's singles champion, Marcin Jurkiewicz, for the first time.

Meanwhile, Alice Loveridge won again as Guernsey's women lost to Mongolia in their final play-off match to finish 66th of the 76 teams in Germany.

Loveridge beat E. Byambaa 3-1 but with Bethany Pipet and Paula Le Ber both losing in straight games, Loveridge returned to the table and this time went down in five sets to B. Batsaikhan.
