NIGHTCLUBS Les Folies d'Amour, BarBados and Club 54 have been granted new category E liquor licences.

Although concerns were raised in the Royal Court yesterday about incidents inside and outside the clubs, all three designated officials were praised for the way they and their licensed door staff dealt with problems and their efforts to prevent disorder.

All three had a good working relationship with the police but were advised that they needed to be constantly vigilant, the court heard.

The new licences come into effect on 1 June.

St Peter Port constables had concerns at the limited size of the dance floor at BarBados and wanted assurances that it would be increased.

'We would support a floor on which you could dance ? currently it's masquerading as a nightclub,' said senior parish constable Richard Barneby.

He was optimistic that the necessary work would be undertaken as, under the law, 35% of the total area inside a nightclub has to be a dance-floor area.

Designated official Patrick Anslow said plans were in place and it was anticipated that there would be a rubber rather than wooden floor as people could slip if drinks were spilt on the latter.

The police said they had received no complaints since he was appointed to take charge of the club in February.

'It seems you are working well in partnership with the police. We appreciate it's not easy,' said Deputy Bailiff Richard Collas.

Late-night trouble in Town has to be kept down as much as possible, he added.

The court was not seeking to impose any conditions on the continued operation of the premises but he warned that there were extensive powers to revoke a licence under the new law.

St Peter Port constables also wanted to see Club 54 separated from the WKD bar and internal modifications to allow an adequate dance floor.

An application to carry out the work will be submitted shortly, the court heard.

Club 54's current designated official, Roberto Mascherucci, agreed with a recommendation to restrict the number in it at any one time to 600.

Les Folies d'Amour designated official Tony Le Marchant agreed to abide by a condition recommended by the Fire and Rescue Service that the premises be limited to 450 people.

Police Inspector Ruari Hardy said that it employed sufficient door staff to monitor the club and outside its door and the licensee had a good working relationship with the police.

'The court is pleased with that,' said the Deputy Bailiff.

'You need to be constantly vigilant,' he added.
