NEIL TANGUY staved off a determined challenge from Colin Riou to win the final of the inter-club Henderson Cup matchplay at L'Ancresse. Playing off six to Riou's eight, Tanguy struck the first blow.

After sharing birdies at the first, Tanguy went ahead at the second and doubled his advantage with a birdie two at the third.

By the seventh, Riou was level and went one up at the 12th.

But Tanguy hit back straight away and having edged ahead again with a birdie at the 16th, halved the last two holes to lift the trophy.

Craig Shorto and Jack Leale won the Guernsey Junior Golf Club's opening white and red tee competitions of 2006.

Shorto won the white tee event contested by 15 juniors with a net 67 off his nine handicap, while Leale scored 53 Stableford points in the event for less experienced juniors.

It's been a promising start to the campaign for the club's leading players, several of whom have been challenging for honours, or claiming them, in senior Royal Guernsey and L'Ancresse competitions.

The latest success story is Adam Tardivel who romped to victory in the L'Ancresse Golf Club's Centenary Trophy with a remarkable 37 Stableford points in gale-force winds.
