Tostevin scoops May's top FoM prizes with boat-caught 8-9-6 John Dory

MARK TOSTEVIN won the top prizes in the May fish of the month competition. His 8-9-6 John Dory scored 77.91% and gave him the Shakespeare Monthly Angling Award for the best overall fish and the Peter Frise Tankard for the top boat-caught specimen.

The J. Meerveld and Sons Tankard for the best shore-caught fish went to Paul McLaren for his 1-2-12 mackerel which was worth 41.66%.

The two runner-up prizes of Bucktrout's Bass beers went to Paul Page, 22-15-0 boat-caught ling, 62.20% and Colin Druce, 17-0-14 boat-caught turbot, 56.37%.

The two unsuccessful entries, both boat-caught fish, were Mark Page, 7-0-4 brill, 51.72% and Craig Addlesee, 15-2-0 turbot, 49.98%.

Dutch visitor Angelo Rombouts has entered a brill in the visitors' section of the June fish of the month. A ledgered garfish strip at Banc de la Schole proved the downfall of a 9-14-11 specimen, which will be judged against the 13-9-0 Bailiwick boat record.

Barry Jacobs has caught a superb John Dory on the Great Bank. He legered a live mackerel bait and was rewarded with a 10-6-13 fish, which will be assessed against the 11-0-5 Bailiwick boat best.

THE Guernsey Sea Anglers' Club junior section's season got off to an exciting start when the youngsters hit the mackerel during the three-hour evening boat match.

They had hectic sport on their spinning gear as the 17 youngsters caught a total of 121 to bring to the scales.

The match was fished from two charter boats at the Grunes at Jerbourg, the Great Bank and the wreck outside the harbour.

The remainder of the catch consisted of 16 pollack, two pout and two ballan wrasse.

Jake Meerveld was the winner, his catch being 10 mackerel, one pout and three pollack for 14-2-0 and 128.5 points.

His catch gave him the President's prize of a £5 tackle voucher and trophy miniature for the heaviest bag of the night.

The award for the heaviest fish on Lord Gray went to Jack Amy for a 4-9-0 ballan wrasse, while Robert Wakeford won the heaviest fish prize on Margaret K with a 4-4-0 pollack.

Meerveld's win gave him a good start to the season for he finished 36.25 points ahead of Matthew Ceresa in second place, who had landed nine mackerel and one pollack for 8-13-0 and 92.25 points.

ANDREW BROWN has won the Bailiwick Bass Club's Summer Cup.

The weekend-long shore competition saw three bass brought to the scales. Brown's winning fish weighed 5-4-8, Steve Huxster had a 4-10-5 fish and Mark Fletcher one of 4-1-5.

The club will be hoping for good results at the weekend for the Quayside Marine and Leisure Open Bass challenge.

It starts on Friday with registration from 6pm onwards and will continue until 9.30pm on Monday. Weigh-ins will be 9-9.30am and 9-9.30pm each day at the control centre at Bulwer Avenue, opposite Channel Television.

It's open to all, with boat and shore sections, special prizes for women and junior anglers, a pairs competition, optional pools in both sections, a bonus prize of at least £1,000 for the heaviest fish over the Bailiwick shore record and a guaranteed prize list totalling in excess of £2,000.

CURRENT Sark AC champion Shirley Lancaster is determined to retain her title for she won the club's all-night match and further consolidated her lead at the top of the championship list.

Her winning catch was one garfish, five pollack and one ballan wrasse for 8-4-0 and 40 points.

The match attracted 17 members but only seven found fish, the total catch consisting of three ballan wrasse, 13 pollack, one lesser-spotted dogfish, one garfish, one three-bearded rockling and one conger.

The conger weighed 16-7-0 and was landed by Glyn Williams, who was given the straight 30 points the club award for this species.

Lancaster's lead at the top of the championship is now 39.75 points over second placed Jason Brehaut.
