ON A weekend break from his Continental base in Belgium, Tobyn Horton showed his continuing improvement in a solo victory in the Island Road Race Championship held over five laps of the arduous Vazon circuit. The 56-mile scratch event opened with veteran Terry Wright attacking and taking Ann Bowditch, Chris Le Page and Tom Becker with him and gaining almost a minute on the main bunch.
Once the main field decided to start racing, they soon brought the early break back before the start of the third ascent of L'Eree hill, following some strong riding by Horton and the usual suspects, Rob Smart, Stuart Le Tissier, Tony Bleasdale and Danny Guillemette.
Despite a flurry of attacks from Horton and Smart, the lead group stayed together until the fourth ascent of the hill when Horton made his move, swiftly closed by Le Tissier, Smart and Bleasdale.
The four then maintained their lead, with Horton finally getting away on the short climb to the finish to add another victory to his growing palmares and a good confidence boost before returning to Belgium.
