Newcomer Mills not fazed
GUERNSEY have not won an inter-insular at La Moye in 37 years, but 18-year-old debutant Sean Mills believes the greens can pull off a shock this weekend.
GUERNSEY have not won an inter-insular at La Moye in 37 years, but 18-year-old debutant Sean Mills believes the greens can pull off a shock this weekend. 'We're going in as underdogs but we can use that to our advantage,' said Mills, one of three new caps in the Sarnian team alongside Campbell Hardie and Mike Hamon.
At La Moye, Guernsey will be aiming to avoid a third successive defeat, having lost at L'Ancresse last September and at Grouville in 2004.
Mills knows all about the Sarnians' bad record on the west-coast course, but is not intimidated, having done so well at the recent La Moye Salver, finishing fourth in a classy field and only two shots behind the winner, CI champion Matthew Parkman.
'You've got to think your way around it. I don't mind it down there,' said the youngest member of the side.
Non-playing captain Steve Turvey says it is hard to pinpoint just why Guernsey fare so poorly at La Moye.
If anything, he says, it is a lack of course knowledge and for that reason he took a squad of 12 top players to Jersey to play in the La Moye Salver.
Jersey have chosen two new caps in Gyles Robin and Alex Guelpa for a match which opens with fourball rubbers tomorrow afternoon.
A series of foursomes and 10 singles follow on Sunday.
