Vaudin lifts Untouchables
IF THE winning team in the annual Inter Club Am-Am had to have a name, most appropriately it would have been The Untouchables.
IF THE winning team in the annual Inter Club Am-Am had to have a name, most appropriately it would have been The Untouchables. The all Royal Guernsey quartet of Mick Marley, Nigel Vaudin, David Nicolle and David Rowlinson romped their way to a two-day winning score of 248, a massive 32 under par.
It's not as if the conditions were easy.
With only seven shots being shared between them and following on from their first round 14 under par, the quartet headed out in the blustery conditions of day two to improve on their first round by four further shots.
Out of the group Vaudin proved to be the anchor man.
He registered two net birdies, three gross birdies and an eagle to gain seven shots for his team on the final day, before his team mates had a look in.
The team golf format also gave Rowlinson the freedom to roll his putts with confidence and he got his side off to the ideal start and finish on the second day with birdies at the first and 18th holes.
Amid some ordinary play by his standards Marley came good in the end, picking up two shots in the last three holes - not that they were needed.
Nicolle added to the well balanced side with two back-to-back birdie threes at the eighth and ninth holes before finding two more threes at the 13th and 17th holes.
A distant nine shots back in second place were the team of Brian Queru, Rick Paisley, John Goodall and Bob Le Bargy with Queru playing the par threes in some style.
A vital birdie by him on their 36th hole gave his side the runner-up spot on countback from the halfway leaders Dave Warr, Steve Birkett, Niall Counihan and Brian Chapman.
The presentation marked David Platt's retirement as the club's competition secretary after 12 years of fine service.
