MIKE APPELQVIST and Hampshire record-breaker Matt Tardivel were the winners in the Bowmen of Guernsey's last outdoor shoot of the summer season - a double American round. The American round is two-and-a-half dozen arrows at each distance of 60, 50 and 40 yards, all shot on full faces, with women shooting the same distances as the men, one of the few outdoor rounds where they compete together.

Scoring is imperial, with all the gold worth nine, the red seven, blue five, black three and white one.

The morning was mainly dull with occasional glimpses of the sun and a tricky wind, but easier than some of the competitions this year. The afternoon brightened up for the second round and the wind lessened, though towards the end the threat of rain was present.

Appelqvist had it pretty much his own way in the compound competition, with his usual rivals, Steve Yates and Mark Nicholls, choosing to shoot longbow.

He scored 1,596 out of a possible 1,620 with good consistent shooting. Newcomers Chris Ure (1,329) and Kieran Kelly (1,186) took second and third places respectively.

Tardivel scored a new Hampshire record of 1,512 in the recurve.

Derrick Thatcher (1,426) was second while Dave Nash (1,398) came third.

Two newcomers contended the junior recurve section, with Ashley Winter taking the honours from Michael Marquand.
