GUERNSEY had a tougher-than-expected time as they retained the Investec women veterans' crown for a third year running. At Foote's Lane the younger home side fancied their chances and they looked good for the win when they took a 1-0 lead in the first half courtesy of a Jayne Carter direct strike at a penalty corner.

Jersey then went on to equalise before the break through thanks to a penalty corner.

Into the second half and with the pressure on, the greens managed to wrap up the proceedings when inside right, Hilary Stokes, scored in open play.

The score stayed 2-1 until the end.

'We've got a young team so we were quietly confident,' said Guernsey captain Michelle Gilson.

'But in actual fact it was a lot closer than we thought it was going to be. It was good and we deserved to win but it was a bit too close for comfort,' she said.

Guernsey team:

Carter, Brown, Damarell, Le Tocq, Smith, Hill, Pritchard, Bushell, Stokes, Stenner, Gillson (captain), Curtis, Sharp, Whitmore, Dawes.
