NERINE clipped Eagles' wings as they overcame the strong Windsor side in the South Region Division Two clubs league at Beau Sejour yesterday. In a tight, hotly-contested affair, the Guernsey champions took the honours 41-38.
'We had a few lapses of concentration but it was a good game,' said Nerine coach Gill Queripel.
'They fought hard and it was always difficult until the last minute.'
Nerine ultimately deserved the victory through solid defence, with Amy Wright at goal defence particularly shining bright and captain Nena Bourgaize and Kerry Brown doing a fine job at the other end by regularly finding the net.
'I think we played well,' said Bourgaize.
'During the warm-up we were a bit out of it and sometimes we can be slow to start but I think everyone played well.
'Hopefully we should win the rest of our games. We've lost some silly games and we seem to play better at home.'
It was goal for goal in the early stages and Nerine were one ahead at 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the second Eagles rallied and briefly went ahead but the home side dug deep to lead by two points at half time.
It was still tit for tat after the break and there was a fascinating battle between the two centres, Claire Queripel of Nerine and Lara Heywood. Queripel ultimately came out on top and the home side squuezed home by three.
