ALISON MERRIEN, no stranger to being in the spotlight, broke new ground at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton-on-Sea, Norfolk, yesterday when she took part in her first WBT ranking event. Drawn to play with 'new' MBE Alex Marshall on her first appearance in the world mixed pairs matchplay event, Merrien piled her bowls around the jack and helped the flying Scot to an outstanding 12-2, 7-3 victory over the defending champions, Carol Ashby and John Price.

'I was delighted when I learnt I was to partner Alex, who is one of the best bowlers in the world,' said the Sarnian. 'I only joined the PBA last year, so I was pleased to get the invitation and I was determined not to let anyone down.'

True to her word, she outplayed Ashby, genuinely one of the greatest talents in women's bowls.

The first set was all over in seven ends and the Merrien/Marshall combination needed only eight to wrap things up in the second set as Merrien beat her famous opponent to the jack on 12 of the 15 ends.
