Bailey needs pack to repeat heroics

IT IS amazing how things can change.

IT IS amazing how things can change. In November Guernsey hit their lowest point of recent times when they suffered an embarrassing 63-0 defeat at Chobham in London Three South-West.

However, since that day things have improved remarkably with three victories, including one away at the leaders, while the defeats have all come against the top three sides and never by more than a converted-score margin.

Tomorrow the Sarnians host Old Wimbledonians at Foote's Lane, buoyed by a convincing 26-5 win at Gosport and Fareham last time out.

'With it likely to be a heavy pitch, we're looking for another big performance from our pack. They played Gosport off the park last game,' said captain Andy Bailey.

'In heavy conditions it's imperative we establish a strong platform, do the basics right and play our rugby from there.

'There is a good buzz around the squad at the moment and we're really looking forward to Saturday.'

Unfortunately, the pack will be without Simon Sharrott at prop although the return of Dave McGall following his recent wedding softens that blow.

The two Jims - Rowe and Elliott - are missing from the backline so Dan Taylor-Edwards shifts to centre and he will be joined in midfield by another returner.

'Our squad strength has increased so we can absorb their loss and still put out a very strong team,' Bailey said.

'Dan will be playing inside centre. He has all the skills and he has proved to be a very versatile player.

'I think his background as a flanker will serve him well and I wouldn't be surprised if he was responsible for effecting a few turnovers of their ball in contact.

'We also welcome back Ben Le Huray, who is returning to the island after a spell in London, which is great news for the squad.'

They have also benefited this week from another visit by top coach Darren Grewcock, who is helping them with their training and also their performance evaluation.

Victory would bring Guernsey to within a point of their opponents in the league table and they have had the added advantage of an extra week's rest.

On Saturday Old Wimble-donians went down 30-17 to Winchester.

However, they did beat Guernsey early in the season, 29-17.
